How to Choose a Piercing Studio in the UAE: 10 Questions to Ask

By Iris Voltaire · Last updated October 2026

The short answer: Choose a licensed studio that pierces with single-use needles, never a gun, sterilises its tools in an autoclave, uses implant-grade or solid gold starter jewellery, and can show you photos of healed navel piercings it has done. If a studio can't answer the ten questions below, walk away.

Why the studio matters as much as the jewellery

A well-placed piercing heals faster, sits straighter and wears fine jewellery beautifully for years. A badly placed one can migrate, reject, or simply never settle. The difference is almost always the piercer: their training, their hygiene, and whether they take the time to look at your anatomy before they mark you.

Across the UAE and the wider GCC, the number of piercing studios has grown fast, and quality varies. These questions help you tell them apart, whether you're in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh or Doha.

10 questions to ask before you book

1. Are you licensed?

Ask to see the studio's trade licence and any health and safety approvals from the local municipality. A professional studio will be happy to show you.

2. Do you pierce with a needle or a gun?

The only right answer for a navel is a single-use, hollow piercing needle. Piercing guns are designed for earlobes, can't be fully sterilised, and push blunt jewellery through tissue.

3. How do you sterilise your tools?

Listen for “autoclave”, the steam steriliser used in clinics, and ask whether it is regularly tested (spore testing). Wiping with alcohol is not sterilisation.

4. Will you open the needle and jewellery in front of me?

Needles should come from a sealed, sterile pack opened in front of you, and go into a sharps bin straight after.

5. What is your starter jewellery made of?

Look for implant-grade titanium (ASTM F136), implant-grade steel (ASTM F138), or solid nickel-free 14K–18K gold. Not “surgical steel” with no standard, plated metal or acrylic. Here is why the metal matters.

6. Can I see healed navel piercings you've done?

Fresh piercings always look neat. Healed ones show whether placement was right. Ask for photos taken months later.

7. Will you check whether my navel suits a piercing?

Not every navel can hold a standard piercing. A good piercer looks at the shape of your navel while you sit and stand, and will tell you honestly if a different placement, or no piercing, is better.

8. Do you have a female piercer available?

Many studios in the region offer female piercers on request, and a private room. It's a fair question to ask when you book.

9. What aftercare will you give me?

You should leave with written aftercare: sterile saline, no twisting, and when to come back. Our healing guide covers what to expect.

10. Will you change or fit my jewellery later?

A studio that offers check-ups and jewellery changes is invested in how your piercing heals. Ask whether they'll fit a piece you bring in, and whether they sterilise it first.

Not sure your piercing is ready? A professional piercer can check your healing and measure your fit in a few minutes.

Red flags: when to walk away

  • They use a piercing gun on a navel
  • No gloves, or gloves that aren't changed after touching other surfaces
  • They can't tell you what their jewellery is made of
  • They won't show you healed work, or their licence
  • They pierce anyone under 18 without a parent present and ID checked
  • They rush you, or don't look at your navel before marking
  • The price is far below everywhere else; sterile equipment and good jewellery cost money

How to use our “Ask a piercer near you” button

On The Centre collection page and in our guides, the Ask a piercer near you button opens Google Maps with piercing studios near where you are. To get the most from it:

  1. Read the recent reviews, not just the star rating. Look for mentions of cleanliness, navel piercings and aftercare.
  2. Look at the photos customers have posted, especially healed piercings.
  3. Call or message first with a few of the questions above. How a studio answers tells you a lot.
  4. Book a consultation before the piercing if you can. Most good studios offer one.

Bringing a VYKA piece for fitting

Ideally, see a piercer before you order: belly rings are final sale, so it's worth having your gauge and bar length confirmed first. When your piece arrives, a piercer is also the best person to fit it. Bring the piece in its box, tell them it's 18K solid gold, and ask whether they'd like to sterilise it before fitting. They can also confirm your bar length; our size guide explains why that matters.

Questions about ordering

What is the return policy?

We offer 21 Day Return and Money Back Guarantee. For more details please visit our policy here.

Are any purchases final sale?

We are unable to accept returns on certain items. These will be carefully marked before purchase.

When will I get my order?

Delivery takes 1–2 weeks in the UAE and 2–3 weeks elsewhere. Once your order has shipped, you will receive an email with the details. Shipping costs and insurance for your country are set out in our delivery policy.

Can I choose lab-grown or natural diamonds?

Yes. Our designs are offered with lab-grown or natural diamonds. A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond grown above ground, and it usually costs less than a natural diamond of the same size; both are certified by an independent laboratory.

Are the diamonds certified?

Yes. Every diamond is independently certified, by GIA, IGI or another laboratory, and you can check the report number on the laboratory's own website before you pay.
