Al Ain's gold souq is a shopping district, not a destination

Abu Dhabi's own tourism authority names five souqs in Al Ain — Al Ain Souq in the historic city centre, Souq Al Bawadi inside Bawadi Mall, Souq Al Qaws, Souq Al Zafarana and Souq Al Qattara. Not one of them is a gold market. There is no Deira-style destination here to walk end to end.

What exists instead is a jewellery trade woven into the town centre. Four large jewellery chains have a presence in the Central District — the Hai Al Souq and Al Dar Street area, and Meena Bazar. Al Romaizan lists three of its eight Al Ain branches there. Malabar Gold & Diamonds runs two showrooms in Meena Bazar. Joyalukkas has one store in Al Ain, on Zayed Ibn Sultan Street in the Central District. Kalyan opened a Meena Bazaar showroom on 19 October 2024. These shops are sometimes called Al Ain's gold souk.

Abu Dhabi's statistics centre also names the Central District as one of Al Ain's most populated districts, so this is a gold market where residents live and shop rather than a tourist quarter, which makes it easy to miss if you are looking for one.

The malls hold further counters. Al Ain Mall (now branded Makani Mall of Al Ain), in the Kuwaitat area and open since 2001, lists 18 brands across its Jewellery & Watches directory, Damas among them. Al Jimi Mall's directory carries seven in its Watches & Jewelry category, with Al Romaizan on the ground floor and Damas on the ground floor north. Bawadi Mall is the largest in Al Ain with over 400 shops, and Souk Al Zafarana — the new home of Al Ain's old souq — sits around the corner from Al Jimi.

What Al Ain's souqs are actually for

Since the five souqs are the shopping places Abu Dhabi's tourism listings name for Al Ain, it is worth knowing what each is, so you do not spend a Saturday looking for gold in a furniture market. Souq Al Bawadi, inside Bawadi Mall, spreads over 13,000 square metres and houses 55 traditional souk-style operators selling carpets, outdoor home merchandise and furniture. Souq Al Qaws is a hub for more than forty service businesses.

Souq Al Zafarana is the most interesting of them: it is the new home of Al Ain's old souq, sitting around the corner from Al Jimi Mall, and it contains Mubdia Village — a section reserved exclusively for women and staffed by female shopkeepers. For a woman who would rather shop away from a crowded mall floor, that is worth knowing exists, even though the gold trade itself is over in the Central District.

A city that chose not to build upwards

Here is the detail that explains why Al Ain feels unlike anywhere else in the UAE, and it is a planning choice rather than an accident of taste: Al Ain has long held new buildings to strict height controls. Oxford Business Group reported in 2015 that, minarets and domes aside, buildings in the town centre cannot exceed 20 metres, with two to three storeys the limit elsewhere in the city.

No tower blocks, no mall rising over the skyline. It is a deliberate low-rise city set around an oasis, and the UAE government portal itself calls Al Ain the Garden City. Al Ain Oasis spreads across 1,200 hectares and holds 147,000 date palms, still fed by the traditional falaj irrigation system.

It is also the country's first World Heritage site. The Cultural Sites of Al Ain — Hafit, Hili, Bidaa Bint Saud and the Oases Areas — were inscribed by UNESCO in 2011, for evidence including circular stone tombs dating to around 2500 BC and an aflaj irrigation system whose Hili example is among the oldest known, reaching back to the Iron Age. UNESCO describes Al Ain as sitting at the crossroads of the ancient land routes between Oman, the Arabian Peninsula, the Persian Gulf and Mesopotamia. Precious things have been traded through here for a very long time.

What a certified ring costs, and how much choice there is at each weight

"Engagement rings al ain" is a phrase Google completes on its own, so here is the ladder from one carat upwards in dirhams, with the number of distinct ring designs available at each of those weights.

Centre stone Lab-grown (AED) Natural (AED) Designs available
1.00 ct 4,000 – 5,000 9,490 – 16,000 265
1.50 ct 4,300 – 6,170 17,470 – 33,960 262
2.00 ct 5,930 – 7,420 35,120 – 65,370 262
2.50 ct 7,040 – 10,470 44,880 – 75,890 262
3.00 ct 8,680 – 12,520 58,640 – 87,250 262

Complete rings delivered free to any Al Ain address, 5% VAT included, made to order. In each cell the first figure is the lowest price at that weight and the second is the price at or below which three-quarters of options sit, so some designs cost more.

Al Ain is a region of Abu Dhabi, not an emirate

The seven emirates are Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. Al Ain is not among them: it is the eastern region of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, alongside Abu Dhabi city and Al Dhafrah in the west, governed by Al Ain City Municipality, established in 1967 and operating under the Department of Municipalities and Transport.

The Al Ain Region is not small either — its population reached 986,910 in 2024, about 24 per cent of the entire Emirate of Abu Dhabi, having grown 4.4 per cent that year.

Geographically it is genuinely inland: roughly 160 kilometres east of Abu Dhabi city and about 120 kilometres south of Dubai, bordered on the east by the Omani town of Al-Buraimi. Abu Dhabi's own tourism material puts Al Ain less than ninety minutes from the capital, and says the drive takes approximately one and a half to two hours on the E22 from Abu Dhabi or the E66 from Dubai. Jebel Hafeet stands to the south — the UAE government portal gives its height as 1,240 metres and Abu Dhabi's tourism board as 1,249, a small disagreement between two official sources that we would rather report than quietly pick a side on.

Why the drive is the wrong tool for a diamond

Around ninety minutes to Abu Dhabi, and a similar drive to Dubai. For gold sold by weight, a trip can pay: the daily rate is public, only the making charge varies, and more counters means more quotes to compare.

For a diamond it pays much less, and it is worth being precise about why. There is no public daily diamond rate you can check a quote against, the way the gold rate is published — trade price lists exist, but they are subscription-only and are not retail prices. Two stones of identical carat weight can differ threefold in price on colour, clarity and cut alone, and those differences are not resolvable by eye across a counter under retail lighting. What actually protects a diamond buyer is an independent laboratory report, a way to match that report to the stone, and a price broken into its parts. None of those require a motorway.

Buying without a counter

We have no walk-in showroom, in Al Ain or anywhere else; consultations happen on WhatsApp and video call. Tell us the stone or the design you have in mind and a jeweller will suggest options; to confirm a specific stone and its laboratory report (GIA, IGI or HRD) before ordering, ask on WhatsApp. The quote comes itemised — stone, metal and making charge — with the 5% VAT already inside the total. Nothing is collected at the door.

Delivery anywhere in the Al Ain region is free, insured and signed for on arrival. Our rings are made to order and arrive within 1 to 2 weeks of order confirmation; once dispatched, transit within the UAE is typically 1 to 3 business days. A ring designed for you from scratch takes 3 to 4 weeks. If there is a date, tell us the date rather than the timeline and we will say plainly whether it works.

Sizing is worth settling before you order, particularly for a surprise. Our size guide covers measuring a ring she already wears. Within 30 days of delivery, we cover the standard local market rate for one resize at a jeweller near you on eligible styles (pavé bands, eternity bands and any band with diamonds set along its surface cannot be resized); a resized ring counts as a custom order, so it is no longer eligible for the 21-day change-of-mind return.

What to ask before you pay anyone

  1. Which laboratory certified this stone, and may I see the report before paying? GIA, IGI or HRD. An in-house report is a marketing document, not an independent grade.
  2. Is the report number inscribed on the diamond? If it is, that ties the stone in the ring to the paper in your hand; if not, ask how the stone will be matched to its report.
  3. What is the making charge, as its own number? Not folded into the metal. Without it, two quotes cannot be compared.
  4. Is the 5% VAT inside this price, and is anything collected on delivery? With VYKA, for a UAE delivery: yes, and no.
  5. What exactly will the report say? Carat, colour and clarity — plus a cut grade for a round brilliant — each as a single value on an independent report. If a quote gives a range, you are being offered a specification band: ask for the report of the exact stone you will receive before paying. A GIA report on a lab-grown stone issued since 1 October 2025 gives a Premium or Standard rating instead of separate colour and clarity grades.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a gold souq in Al Ain?
Not in the Deira sense. None of the five souqs Abu Dhabi's tourism authority lists for Al Ain — Al Ain Souq, Souq Al Bawadi, Souq Al Qaws, Souq Al Zafarana and Souq Al Qattara — is a gold market. The jewellery shops cluster in the Central District around Hai Al Souq and Al Dar Street, sometimes called Al Ain's gold souk, with more along Meena Bazar.

Where do I buy an engagement ring in Al Ain?
Several chains are concentrated in the Central District: Al Romaizan lists three branches around Hai Al Souq and Al Dar Street (eight across Al Ain), Malabar Gold & Diamonds two showrooms in Meena Bazar, Joyalukkas one store on Zayed Ibn Sultan Street, and Kalyan opened in Meena Bazaar in October 2024. Al Ain Mall and Al Jimi Mall carry further jewellery and watch brands.

Is Al Ain an emirate?
No. Al Ain is the eastern region of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, governed by Al Ain City Municipality under the Department of Municipalities and Transport. The seven emirates are Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah.

How far is Al Ain from Abu Dhabi and Dubai?
About 160 kilometres east of Abu Dhabi city and around 120 kilometres south of Dubai. Abu Dhabi's tourism material puts Al Ain less than ninety minutes from the capital, and the drive at approximately one and a half to two hours on the E22 from Abu Dhabi or the E66 from Dubai.

How much is an engagement ring delivered to Al Ain?
From AED 2,800 for a complete ring set with small diamonds. A ring with a one-carat centre stone starts at AED 4,000 lab-grown or AED 9,490 natural, with 5% VAT included and insured delivery at no extra cost.

How much choice is there at three carats?
Considerably less than lower down the ladder — 151 distinct designs at 3.00 ct against 469 at 1.50, 2.00 and 2.50 ct. If you want a three-carat stone it is worth starting the conversation earlier.

Do you deliver across the Al Ain region?
Yes. Delivery is free and insured, with a signature on arrival and nothing to pay at the door. Rings are made to order and arrive within 1 to 2 weeks of order confirmation; once dispatched, transit within the UAE is typically 1 to 3 business days.

Can I check the diamond before I commit?
Loose diamonds on our site are listed with their grading report details, and the laboratory certificate for a ring's centre stone comes with the ring. To confirm a specific stone before ordering, ask a jeweller on WhatsApp.
