Fujairah's jewellery shops are on one road

This is not a criticism, it is just the shape of the place, and knowing it saves an afternoon. The branded jewellery in Fujairah city is concentrated along Hamad Bin Abdulla Road — the main east-west artery whose western end runs on as the Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Expressway towards Dubai.

Lulu Mall sits on that road, and its own store directory lists Malabar Gold & Diamonds, Joyalukkas, Damas, Suha Gold & Diamond, Jawahara Jewellery and Titan among its jewellery and watch tenants. TS Gold, a Dubai-based chain selling certified 21K and 18K pieces along with engagement rings and diamonds, gives its Fujairah address on the same street. Al Romaizan lists two east-coast branches: one on Muresheed Hamad Bin Abdullah Street in Fujairah city, and one in the centre of Dibba Al-Fujairah.

Two absences are worth knowing before you set out. Century Mall Fujairah lists no jewellery or gold retailer at all among the brands on its own website — its tenants are apparel, food and beverage, Carrefour and a cinema. And no official source attests a gold souq in Fujairah of the kind Dubai, Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah have; the clusters you will find referenced online rest on business directories rather than any market authority.

The emirate's other malls are worth placing accurately, because their names suggest more than they hold for a jewellery shopper. City Centre Fujairah opened in April 2012 under Majid Al Futtaim with 34,000 square metres of retail and 105 mid-market brands, 85 per cent of them new to Fujairah at the time, anchored by a Carrefour hypermarket. There is also a separate Fujairah Mall, distinct from Lulu Mall, Century Mall and City Centre. We could not confirm jewellery tenants at either from their own published directories, which is not the same as saying there are none — only that we will not tell you there are.

One more detail that says a great deal about the pace of retail here: Joyalukkas only opened its Fujairah showroom on 29 October 2025. A second national chain arriving less than a year ago is not the profile of a mature jewellery market. It is the profile of one that is only now getting served.

What the drive to Dubai actually costs you

Central Dubai to Fujairah city is about 120 kilometres, roughly 88 minutes of driving in free-flow conditions across the Hajar mountains. That is the honest figure, computed on the real road network rather than quoted from a brochure — and "free-flow" is doing work in that sentence, because it assumes an empty road. You will occasionally see forty minutes quoted for this journey. That number refers to a single forty-kilometre mountain stretch, not the trip.

It is worth remembering that this drive is recent. The Sheikh Khalifa Highway linking Dubai and Fujairah opened on 4 December 2011 and cut twenty to thirty kilometres off the route. Within living memory, the east coast was considerably further from the Gold Souk than it is today. From 30 June 2026 there is also a passenger rail option: Etihad Rail runs Abu Dhabi to Fujairah in one hour forty-five minutes.

So a comparison trip to Deira is most of a day, both ways, and it buys you the ability to compare quotes across several hundred shops. For gold sold by weight, that is genuinely valuable, because the daily rate is public and the only variable is the making charge. For a diamond it is worth much less: there is no published diamond rate to check anything against, and two stones of identical carat weight can differ threefold on colour, clarity and cut — differences you will not resolve standing at a counter. What protects a diamond buyer is the certificate and a written breakdown, and neither of those requires the drive.

What a certified ring costs, by the shape of the stone

Shape is the first thing most people actually decide, and it moves the price more than buyers expect — a pear or an oval spreads the same carat weight over a larger face than a round brilliant, and cutting yield differs by shape.

Why "local" is complicated on this coast

Fujairah is the only emirate whose coastline lies entirely on the Gulf of Oman rather than the Arabian Gulf, and Fujairah city is the only Emirati capital on the east coast, sitting at the foot of the Hajar mountains. Its shores run about seventy kilometres, from the city in the south to Dibba in the far north.

But the map along that stretch is not one emirate. Khor Fakkan is an exclave of Sharjah, geographically surrounded by Fujairah. Kalba and Dibba Al-Hisn are Sharjah municipalities on the same coastline. And Dibba itself is divided three ways: Dibba Al-Fujairah under Fujairah, Dibba Al-Hisn under Sharjah, and Dibba Al-Baya under the Governorate of Musandam in Oman.

That matters practically. "Gold shops in Dibba Al-Fujairah" is a real search on this coast, and it is a search about one third of a divided town. If you are in Dibba, the nearest jeweller may sit under a different emirate's authority than your address does — and if a dispute ever arose, that is the difference between two consumer-protection departments. Buying against a certificate, with the price agreed in writing before anything is made, is the same transaction wherever on that coast you happen to live.

Why the east coast has fewer jewellers than you would expect

It is not neglect, it is arithmetic and history. The emirate's population reached 314,829 in mid-2024, and Fujairah city itself stood at 118,933 in 2023 — a fraction of the catchment a Dubai or Sharjah retailer serves. National chains open where the footfall is, which is why a second one arriving in October 2025 counted as news here.

The history compounds it. Fujairah was the last of the sheikhdoms to be recognised as a Trucial State, in 1952, and the modern connections are newer still: the international airport, the only national airport on the UAE's east coast, began operating in October 1987, and the highway that made Dubai a ninety-minute drive opened in December 2011. A retail sector has had rather less time to form here than on the other coast.

What the emirate does have is a different kind of weight. The Port of Fujairah describes itself as the only multi-purpose seaport on the UAE's eastern coastline, sitting seventy nautical miles from the Strait of Hormuz — one of the most consequential positions in global shipping. Inland the Hajar mountains give Fujairah more rainfall than the rest of the country, and Al Bidya Mosque, on the road north to Dibba, is the oldest existing mosque in the United Arab Emirates. This is not a place short of substance. It is a place short of jewellery counters, which is a much narrower problem, and a solvable one.

1. Which laboratory certified this stone, and may I see the report before paying? GIA or IGI. An in-house report is a marketing document, not an independent grade.
2. Is the report number inscribed on the diamond? That is what lets you confirm the stone in the ring is the stone on the paper.
3. What is the making charge, as its own number? Not folded into the gold. Without it you cannot compare two quotes.
4. Is the 5% VAT inside this price, and is anything collected on delivery? For a UAE purchase, yes and no respectively.
5. What are the four grades — carat, colour, clarity, cut? Four single values. A range means the stone is not certified to the standard the price implies.
