Ajman has a gold souq — in fact it has two
The Ajman Department of Tourism Development lists an official Gold Souq in the heart of the city, on Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi Street in the Al Nakheel neighbourhood. Locals also distinguish an Old Gold Souq from a New Gold Souk, and that distinction is not folklore: the jeweller Al Romaizan lists a branch in each, Shop 4 in the old souq and Shop 45 in the new one.
The street name is not incidental, either. Ajman has been ruled by the Al Nuaimi family since 1810, and the current ruler, Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi III, has ruled since 1981 — the Gold Souq stands on the street that carries his name. For a market that a visitor might mistake for a minor version of somewhere else, that is a fair indication of where it sits in the emirate's sense of itself.
The tourism department also describes exactly how buying works there, and it is worth quoting because it is the government of Ajman explaining the mechanic rather than a jeweller: gold is sold by weight at international rates, and what you negotiate is the level of workmanship.
Read that sentence again, because it contains the whole problem in miniature. The part of the price anchored to something public — the weight, at the international rate — is the part you cannot argue about. The part you can argue about, the workmanship, is the part with no public reference at all. And for a diamond ring that asymmetry is far worse than for a gold chain, because on top of the negotiable workmanship sits a stone whose value swings threefold on grades you cannot assess across a counter.
"Ajman city centre" means two different places
This trips up more people than it should, including anyone searching for a jeweller. There is the historic city centre — Al Nakheel, where the Gold Souq is — and there is City Centre Ajman, which is a Majid Al Futtaim shopping mall in the Al Jurf district on Al Ittihad Street, the E11. It opened on 1 December 1998 and carries 34,000 square metres of retail. They are different destinations, several kilometres apart, and asking for directions to "Ajman city centre" will get you one or the other roughly at random.
If it is the mall you want, Damas trades on the ground floor and Malabar Gold & Diamonds has a branch there too. If it is the souq you want, head for Al Nakheel instead.
One place that is not a diamond destination despite the name: China Mall Ajman, in the Al Jurf industrial area, is a wholesale and retail complex, and the jewellery traded there is wholesale and costume merchandise rather than certified stones. It is a genuinely useful place for many things. A GIA-certified centre stone is not one of them.
The thing nobody mentions: recourse follows the seller's licence
Commerce in Ajman is regulated by the Department of Economic Development – Ajman, which issues trade licences and runs a consumer protection service. That service covers complaints against shops in the Emirate of Ajman — which is to say, shops holding an Ajman commercial licence.
The practical consequence is one most buyers never think about until they need it. If you live in Ajman and buy from a shop in Deira, your recourse is not with Ajman's department; it follows the emirate that licensed the seller. Twenty-eight minutes of driving can therefore also move which authority hears you if the stone turns out not to match its paperwork.
That is not a reason to avoid buying in Dubai — it is a reason to make the transaction verifiable in the first place. A laboratory certificate with its number inscribed on the diamond, and a written price broken into stone, metal and making charge, is protection that does not depend on which department you end up talking to. Ask for both, everywhere, including here.
Start from the budget, not the carat
Most price tables ask what a given weight costs. Ajman's searches run the other way — people arrive with a number in mind — so this table answers the reverse question: what is the largest certified centre stone each budget actually reaches in live stock.

Twelve minutes to Sharjah, twenty-eight to Deira
Ajman is the smallest emirate, about 260 square kilometres, with roughly sixteen kilometres of Arabian Gulf coastline — and its main landmass is a semi-enclave bordered on the north, east and south entirely by Sharjah. Ajman city runs straight into Sharjah and on into Dubai as one continuous built-up area. Sharjah is about 12.4 kilometres away, roughly fourteen minutes; the Dubai Gold Souk in Deira is about 28 kilometres, roughly twenty-eight minutes.
Almost no one else in the UAE has that. A resident of Fujairah or Ras Al Khaimah is an hour and a half from Deira; an Ajman resident can be there and back inside a lunch break. So the honest position is that comparison shopping is genuinely easy here — and that is a good thing, which we would rather acknowledge than talk you out of.
What proximity does not solve is the thing it never solves. More shops give you more quotes, and more quotes discipline a gold price, because the daily rate is public and only the workmanship varies. There is no published rate for diamonds. Two stones of identical carat weight can differ by a factor of three on colour, clarity and cut, and no amount of walking between counters resolves that without the certificate in your hand. Use the proximity — and bring the four grades with you.
Ajman's own government leans on this openly. The Ajman Media Office describes the emirate as having "become a preferred shopping destination due to its central location, competitive prices, and diverse markets", pointing to modern malls alongside traditional souqs. That is positioning language rather than an independent finding, and we would rather label it as such than quote it as proof — but it does tell you what the emirate believes it competes on, and price competitiveness is a claim a buyer can actually test, one itemised quote at a time.
Ajman is also, for what it is worth, a place where retail genuinely matters: wholesale and retail trade was the emirate's second-largest GDP sector in 2023 at 18.31 per cent, on a GDP above AED 36 billion, and the population reached roughly 583,105 in 2024. This is not a small market pretending otherwise.
Buying without a counter

- Is the report number inscribed on the diamond? That is what ties the stone to the paper.
- Which emirate issued your trade licence? It decides whose consumer protection department hears a complaint.
- Is the 5% VAT inside this figure, and is anything due on delivery? For a UAE purchase: yes, and no.
