What AED 2,000, AED 3,500 and AED 5,000 actually buy

These are the three budgets people in the Emirates most often type into Google, so here is what each one buys from stock we are holding right now rather than from a brochure.

Under AED 2,000 — nothing, and you should be careful with anyone who says otherwise. Of 15,296 live ring variants, zero complete certified diamond rings sit below AED 2,000. The floor is AED 2,005, for a lab-grown solitaire in an 18K setting. You will find rings advertised in the Emirates well under two thousand dirhams, and they are usually one of three things: a bare setting with no centre stone, a cluster of very small stones adding up to a fraction of a carat, or a stone with no independent certificate. All three are legitimate products. None of them is what a buyer picturing a one-carat solitaire has in mind, and the gap between the two is where most disappointment in this market lives.

Under AED 3,500 — 240 distinct ring designs. This is the first budget where the choice is genuinely wide. It buys a lab-grown centre stone up to roughly a carat and a half in a plain or lightly detailed 18K setting, IGI certified, with the certificate number matched to the stone you receive. It does not stretch to a certified natural stone of any meaningful size.

Under AED 5,000 — 568 distinct ring designs. Here the setting stops being a compromise. There is room for a halo, a hidden halo, a three-stone or a shaped band, and enough left over for a lab-grown centre stone around two carats. For natural stones this budget still buys a real, certified diamond, but a smaller one — roughly half a carat rather than a full one.

Diamond price per gram and per carat in the UAE

A great many searches in the Emirates ask for a diamond price per gram, which is how gold is sold here and therefore how people are used to thinking. Diamonds are not sold that way anywhere in the world, and the conversion is not a detail — it changes the number enormously.

A carat is a fixed weight: 0.2 grams. So one gram is five carats. That means a "one gram diamond" is a five-carat stone, which in a certified natural grade is a serious piece of jewellery costing well into six figures in dirhams, not the modest ring most people asking the question have in mind. When a shop quotes you a per-gram figure for a diamond piece, it is almost always quoting the gold per gram and adding the stones separately, or quoting a total weight that mixes metal and stone together. Ask which, before you compare it against anything.

The price, itemised the way a gold shop should do it

The single most useful habit you can take into any jewellery purchase in the Emirates is to ask for the price broken into parts. A fair seller will do it without hesitation. Ours splits four ways:

• The centre stone — priced on carat, colour, clarity and cut, against its GIA or IGI certificate. This is the largest line on almost every ring.
• The metal — 18K gold or 950 platinum, priced on the weight of the actual setting. Gold moves daily; the rate we use is the published market rate on the day we quote, not a house rate.
• The making charge — the labour of building the piece, stated as its own number rather than folded into the metal. In much of the local trade this is where margin hides, quoted as a percentage of gold weight that the buyer never sees itemised.
• VAT and duty — 5% UAE VAT and any customs duty, both already inside the price you see. Nothing further is collected at the door.

The purity of the gold is stamped into the metal itself — 750 for 18K, 916 for 22K — so you can check it on the piece rather than take our word for it. The stone comes with its own laboratory certificate, and the certificate number is laser-inscribed on the girdle of the diamond, readable under a loupe. Those are two independent checks, on two different parts of the ring, that do not depend on trusting the seller.

Are diamonds cheaper in Dubai?

Gold genuinely is, and that reputation has spread to diamonds by association. It is worth separating the two.

Gold in the Emirates is cheap for structural reasons: the rate is published daily and openly, VAT is 5% rather than the double-digit rates common in Europe, and the market is dense enough that no shop can drift far from the published rate without being noticed. Those conditions are real, and they are why the gold souq deserves its reputation.

Diamonds do not inherit any of that. There is no published daily diamond rate to check a quote against. Two stones of the same carat weight can differ in price by a factor of three on colour, clarity and cut alone, and the difference is invisible across a counter without magnification. So the price you are quoted in a shop in Dubai, Sharjah or anywhere else in the Emirates is not disciplined by a public reference the way a gold price is — it is disciplined only by how well you can grade the stone yourself.

That is the whole of our argument, and it is a narrow one. We are not cheaper because we are in a duty-free zone; the duty is in our price either way. We are cheaper because we do not carry the cost of a showroom on a mall lease, we source the stone against its certificate after you have chosen it rather than holding inventory that has to be financed, and we publish the price rather than negotiating it. A stone with the same certificate, the same four grades and the same weight should cost the same wherever you buy it, and where it does not, the difference is the shop, not the diamond.

Lab-grown versus natural, in dirhams

A lab-grown diamond is chemically, optically and physically a diamond. It is not a simulant, it is not cubic zirconia, and a jeweller cannot tell it from a mined stone by eye — the distinction requires specialist equipment, which is precisely why both types are certified by the same laboratories.

The difference on our own price table is stark and it is the honest reason most people choose one over the other. At one carat, lab-grown starts at AED 2,240 against AED 7,950 natural. At two carats the gap widens: AED 4,390 against AED 34,020. Put another way, the budget that buys a one-carat natural stone will buy a two-and-a-half or three-carat lab-grown one from the same table.

What you are paying the difference for, with a natural stone, is rarity and the resale market that rarity supports. A natural diamond has a secondhand value that a lab-grown one currently does not, and for some families that matters a great deal. Neither answer is wrong. We sell both, we certify both, and we will not push you toward the more expensive one. What is included in the price, and what is not

Included: the certified centre stone, any accent stones, the 18K gold or platinum setting, the laboratory certificate, 5% UAE VAT, customs duty, insured delivery to any address in the Emirates, and the packaging. Also included, and worth saying because it is not universal: one resizing within the first ninety days if the fit is wrong.

Not included, and we would rather be clear than be discovered: engraving is quoted separately because it depends on the band; expedited production carries a fee when a date is tight; and we do not offer a lifetime warranty, because a lifetime warranty on a ring that will be worn daily for decades is a promise most jewellers cannot actually keep. What to ask before you pay anyone

These five questions work in any shop in the Emirates, not only ours, and the answers tell you more than any amount of browsing.

1. Which laboratory certified this stone, and can I see the certificate before I pay? GIA and IGI are the two you want. A certificate from an unnamed or in-house laboratory is a marketing document, not an independent grade.
2. Is the certificate number inscribed on the stone? If it is, you can verify that the stone in the ring is the stone on the paper. If it is not, you are trusting an association between two objects.
3. What is the making charge, as its own number? Not as a percentage folded into the gold. A seller who will not separate it is telling you something.
4. Is VAT and duty inside this price? In the Emirates the answer should be yes for a domestic purchase. For anything shipped in from abroad, ask who pays the customs bill and when.
5. What is the exact carat, colour, clarity and cut? Four values. If any of them is given as a range or a letter band rather than a single grade, the stone is not certified to the standard the price implies.

How long it takes
