Why GIA Certification Matters
GIA (Gemological Institute of America) is the global standard for natural diamond grading. Founded in 1931 in the US, it is the lab that created the 4Cs grading system (carat, colour, clarity, cut) that the entire industry now uses. GIA is independent — it does not sell diamonds, which means its grading has no commercial conflict of interest.
When a diamond is graded by GIA:
- The stone is evaluated by at least two independent graders
- Measurements, proportions, and optical properties are documented
- Inclusions and blemishes are mapped on a plotting diagram
- A report number is laser-inscribed on the stone girdle (for most GIA reports)
- The final report is verifiable online at gia.edu
A non-GIA diamond — even if it has a certificate from a lesser-known lab — does not carry the same weight. Saudi buyers paying natural diamond prices deserve GIA grading. VYKA only sells natural diamonds with GIA reports above 0.30 carats (smaller accent diamonds are graded in-house to GIA standards but not individually certified, which is industry standard).
VYKA’s Sourcing Process
Every natural diamond VYKA sells follows this sourcing path:
- Certified suppliers — VYKA partners with diamond wholesalers in Antwerp, Mumbai, and Dubai who carry GIA-certified inventory.
- Kimberley Process compliance — every stone is traceable back to a conflict-free origin. VYKA does not accept stones without Kimberley Process documentation.
- Shortlist to client — for each order, VYKA pulls a shortlist of stones matching the client’s 4Cs brief and budget, and shares the GIA reports directly.
- Client selects — the client reviews each certificate, asks questions, and confirms the exact stone.
- Stone delivered to VYKA workshop — the selected stone is shipped to our Dubai workshop for setting.
- Ring produced and shipped — the ring is made to order and shipped via insured courier to the Saudi client.
Understanding the 4Cs
Saudi buyers new to diamonds typically want a quick reference for the 4Cs:
- Carat — weight of the stone. 1 carat = 200 milligrams. Price rises non-linearly with carat (a 2 carat stone costs more than twice a 1 carat stone of the same quality).
- Colour — graded D (colourless) to Z (light yellow). D-F are considered colourless and command the highest price. G-J (near colourless) are visually indistinguishable from D-F in most settings but significantly cheaper.
- Clarity — graded FL (flawless) down to I3 (heavily included). VS1-VS2 are the sweet spot for engagement rings — no visible inclusions to the naked eye, strong value.
- Cut — graded Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor (for round brilliants). The most important of the 4Cs for visual sparkle. VYKA recommends Excellent or Very Good cut grades.
Fancy Colours
VYKA can source GIA-certified fancy colour natural diamonds on request:
- Yellow — the most common fancy colour. Ranges from Fancy Light Yellow to Fancy Vivid Yellow.
- Pink — rare and expensive. Most Saudi pink natural diamonds are Fancy Light Pink or Fancy Pink.
- Champagne and cognac — warm brown tones. More accessible pricing than pinks and yellows.
- Chocolate and black — niche but increasingly popular for statement pieces.
Fancy colours command a significant premium over equivalent colourless stones. Lead times can be longer (4-8 weeks) because stock is more limited.
Verifying Your GIA Certificate
Every VYKA natural diamond ships with its original GIA report. Saudi clients can independently verify any report number:
- Visit gia.edu
- Enter the GIA Report Number (printed on the certificate)
- Cross-check the results against the physical certificate
If the stone has a laser inscription (most GIA reports above 0.30 carats), you can also verify it with a 10x jeweller’s loupe — the same report number appears etched on the girdle of the diamond.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does VYKA use GIA for natural diamonds and IGI for lab grown?
GIA is the gold standard for natural diamonds. IGI has specialised in lab grown diamond grading. Each lab leads in its domain.
Can I order a specific GIA report number?
Yes. If you have a particular GIA-certified stone in mind (seen online, recommended by a friend), share the report number and we will source it if available.
What’s the difference between GIA and EGL or HRD?
GIA is stricter and more consistent in grading. EGL and HRD grades often appear "better" on paper but the stones grade lower at GIA. VYKA trusts GIA for natural diamonds.
How long does it take to source a specific GIA stone?
Most client briefs are matched within 24-48 hours from our current supplier network. Very specific requirements (e.g., a particular shape and colour combination) may take longer.
Do you have stock on hand?
VYKA holds a limited selection of natural diamonds in-house. Most client orders are sourced-to-order from certified partners. This keeps our pricing competitive.
Are GIA certified diamonds a good investment?
Diamond investment is complex and depends on grade, rarity, and market conditions. GIA-certified stones hold resale value better than non-certified or lesser-certified stones, but diamonds are generally not liquid investments. VYKA recommends treating a natural diamond ring as an asset to own and wear, not a trade.
How do I verify the stone I receive is the one I selected?
The GIA report number matches. For stones with laser inscription, the report number is etched on the girdle — visible under 10x magnification at any Saudi jeweller.
