What is a halo engagement ring?

A halo engagement ring frames the centre diamond with a ring of small pavé stones, the way a mount frames a portrait. Does a halo really make a diamond look bigger?

Two honest caveats. Close up, a halo is visibly a halo, so if the wearer wants an unmistakably large single stone the illusion will not satisfy her. And if the centre is J or K colour, very white melee can make it look warmer by contrast. Ask us to colour-match the melee before the ring is set; it costs nothing and removes the problem.

Halo or solitaire - which is the better buy?

What is a hidden halo?

A hidden halo sets the melee horizontally beneath the centre stone, around the basket, instead of flat around the girdle. From above the ring looks like a clean solitaire; from the side, and from the wearer's own eye line, a bright collar of light sits under the stone. Two practical notes: a hidden halo lifts the centre stone by roughly one to one and a half millimetres, so the ring sits higher and catches slightly more, and because the melee faces sideways it collects less dust than a surrounding halo but is harder to reach with a brush.

Which metal and centre shape suit a halo best?

Metal changes the entire effect:

• 18k white gold or platinum - melee and centre read as one continuous stone. This combination maximises the size illusion.
• 18k yellow gold - the halo reads as a deliberate frame rather than an extension of the stone. Less illusion, more design, and the strongest choice for vintage and milgrain styling.
• 18k rose gold - flatters warmer near-colourless stones and suits cushion and oval centres particularly well.

On shape, a halo suits elongated cuts best because it exaggerates length as well as width. An oval or marquise in a halo can look enormous for its weight. How do you look after a halo ring?

Halo rings are not delicate, but they carry more detail than a solitaire, so three habits matter.

Snagging. Bead-set melee sits proud of the metal and will catch on knitwear, abaya and shayla fabric, scarves, hair and towelling. Take the ring off before pulling on a jumper or drying your hair. If it snags repeatedly the beads are worn and need re-tipping, not tolerating.

Cleaning under the halo. Soap film and hand cream collect in the cavity beneath the centre stone, and that film is the real reason a halo ring stops sparkling. Soak it for ten minutes in warm water with a drop of dish soap, brush gently from underneath with a soft baby toothbrush, then rinse and pat dry. Once a week keeps it bright. Avoid bleach and chlorine, and take the ring off in the pool.

Resizing. Think about this before you buy. A fully pavé shank can usually move only about half a size in either direction before the bead work is compromised, and a large share of the rings here carry a pavé band.
